Google Brings Gemini AI To Android Auto

Google is expanding its AI footprint once again — this time by bringing its Gemini assistant to Android Auto, opening the door for more natural conversations and smarter in-car help.

The rollout, announced on November 20, extends Gemini’s presence to more than 250 million vehicles that support Android Auto, replacing the older Google Assistant for users who have already upgraded to their Android phones.

First launched as Bard in 2023 and rebranded in 2024, Gemini has been steadily integrated into Google’s ecosystem, from Maps to Chrome. Bringing it to Android Auto is one of Google’s biggest steps yet in its AI rollout.

With its conversational abilities, Gemini is designed to make driving safer and smoother by helping users navigate, communicate, and stay organized without taking their eyes off the road.

Google says Gemini can now handle a wider range of tasks, from finding restaurants or businesses based on detailed preferences to pulling up addresses buried in your emails. It can summarize incoming messages, send replies with emojis or translations, and even suggest playlists based on your mood or the weather. It also supports Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Tasks, and Samsung’s productivity apps, with more third-party integrations promised.

The AI assistant can even carry on continuous back-and-forth conversations with the drivers through the upcoming Gemini Live feature — everything from brainstorming ideas to rehearsing a speech.

The rollout isn’t limited to Android Auto on smartphones. Google is also bringing Gemini to vehicles with Google Built-In systems. Volvo and Polestar will add Gemini starting with their 2026 models, while General Motors plans to bring it to its Android Automotive-powered cars in 2025.

While Gemini won’t be coming to Apple CarPlay anytime soon, Google says its focus remains on making driving safe by reducing the need to look at screens — and that this is only the beginning of its in-car AI journey.
